Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Reference Group
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander reference group

The first meeting of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander reference group was held at the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research (CDFVR) in 2003. The aim of the reference group is to ensure that CDFVR is inclusive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and that its activities are responsive to their needs regarding domestic and family violence.

While there are some common issues for these communities relating to minority status within a dominant Anglo-Celtic culture, the Centre recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are distinct from each other and that the Centre's work needs to be informed by each of their unique contexts.

The reference group meets with CDFVR two or three times a year, as well as being available to give advice and direction on a range of projects including the annual Indigenous Family Violence Prevention Forum, identify priorities for research and advise on educational materials and project evaluation.
