Time for Action: The National Council’s Plan for Australia to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children
On the 29th of April 2009, the National Council to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children presented its Plan, Time for Action, to the Prime Minister, the Honourable Kevin Rudd MP. The Prime Minister responded with an announcement of $42 million to implement immediately 18 of 20 urgent priorities identified by the Council, and a commitment to the take the Council’s Plan to COAG in that same week.
Deputy Chair of the National Council, and CDFVR Director, Heather Nancarrow, acknowledged this action saying:
“We have a major difference with this plan and that is that we have got our Prime Minister absolutely behind us. We have a commitment from our Prime Minister that this will be taken to COAG to enlist the support of and collaboration between the Federal, State and Territory Governments. We have never before had this kind of support from the federal government, or a commitment to work with the states and territories and local governments to address the issue.”1
